The University of Washington (UW) offers a host of resources to support its tradition of
excellence in research and patient care. The UW ranks fourth among universities worldwide
in cited research articles and fourteenth in the number of highly cited researchers on its
faculty. In the 2004 fiscal year, sponsored research grants and contracts to the University
totaled over $953 million, and the UW remained the largest recipient of federal research
funds among public universities, a distinction it has held for thirty years. Over half the
extramural research funding at UW comes from the U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services, testifying to the size and breadth of the University's health research program.
UW Medicine
UW Medicine is comprised of the UW School of Medicine, two principal teaching hospitals - the
UW Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center - and eight UW Medicine Neighborhood Clinics,
as well as several outpatient clinics. UW Medicine handles approximately 20 percent of
hospitalizations in King County . More than 37,000 patients are admitted per year to the
principal teaching hospitals and there are over one million patient visits per year.
UW Medical Center
UWMC ranks 9th among America 's best hospitals in US
News & World Report's 2004 honor roll and is a Magnet Hospital for nursing.

some of the highest scores in the country by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare
Organizations (JCAHO).
UW School of Medicine
The UW ranks first among public medical schools and second among all medical schools in federal
research funding. In the 2004 fiscal year, NIH research awards to the UW School of Medicine
totaled $506.2 million. Since 1990, five UW faculty members have won Nobel Prizes in Medicine,
more than any other institution during that time period. The UW faculty includes 33 Institute
of Medicine members and 26 National Academy of Sciences members. The medical school has a
full-time faculty of 1,760.
For twelve consecutive years, US News & World
Report has ranked the UW School of Medicine as the top medical school for training
primary-care physicians. In 2005, the UW School of Medicine was the only medical school in
the nation to rank in the top ten in every possible category in the
US News & World Report medical school rankings.
Its academic programs in family medicine and rural health continue to be ranked number one in
the nation, and the school won recognition in a variety of other fields: it tied for No. 4 in
teaching medical students about AIDS, ranked No. 6 in teaching about women's health, No. 7 in
geriatrics training, No. 7 in internal medicine training, tied for No. 8 in teaching future
physicians to recognize and treat drug and alcohol abuse; and tied for No. 9 in pediatrics

The UW School of Public Health and Community Medicine is a national leader in innovative
public health education and research. It ranked fourth in the nation in the 2003
US News and World Report graduate school survey,
second among public institutions. Established in 1970, it is the only accredited school of
public health north of Berkeley and west of Minneapolis . The school has over 200 faculty in
five departments (Biostatistics, Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, Epidemiology,
Health Services, and Pathobiology). The school is recognized worldwide for its
interdisciplinary research in infectious diseases, chronic diseases such as cancer and heart
disease, health care delivery and services, and innovative biostatistical methodologies. The
Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) recently honored seven UWSPHCM faculty for being
among the 228 most influential and highly cited researchers in the world. In 2004, the
school's five departments and thirty interdisciplinary research centers were awarded over
$55 million in research grants and contracts.
School of Dentistry
Among the 50 U.S. dental schools, the UW School of Dentistry consistently ranks among the
top five in research grants from the National Institute on Dental and Craniofacial Research
(NIDCR). The school has over 80 full time faculty and receives 66,000 patient visits per year.
Its special areas of research emphasis include children, older adults, anxiety, orofacial pain,
tissue repair and regeneration, autoimmune response to oral bacteria. In 1999, the
Comprehensive Oral Health Research Center (CCOHR) was formed as one of six national Centers
of Discovery funded by the NIDCR to study the origin of oral and craniofacial health and
susceptibility to disease in children.
School of Pharmacy
The UW School of Pharmacy is ranked the top school in the nation in the Gourman Report and
its Pharm.D. program is among the top three in the Princeton Review. The School is fifth
among 80 schools of pharmacy in total research support, and first in support per faculty
FTE. It is home to a longstanding NIH Program-Project Grant in Drug Interactions. The school's
research in drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics is considered a leading program in drug
development sciences in the U.S. It also serves as a regional center for mass spectometry
of drugs and chemicals.

Community Health. The School of Nursing has received more NIH funding for research than any
other school of nursing for 14 of the past 15 years. 99% of its tenured faculty hold doctoral
degrees.
School of Social Work
The UW School of Social Work has an unusually large research component, largely focused on
health issues, including AIDS, violence, substance abuse, and mental health. The research
program includes centers such as the Social Development Research Group and the NIMH-funded
Prevention Center . Much of this work is conducted in community settings, rather than
clinical populations, using rigorous intervention trials and long-term prospective cohort
studies. With one of strongest research records among schools of social work in the nation,
the UW School of Social Work was awarded over $29 million in research grants in 2004.
